BOOK REVIEW: JEEP OWNER'S BIBLE

We're admittedly biased because the Jeep Owner's Bible is written by our colleague, Moses Ludel. Long-time readers of Off Road will recognize some of the tech how-tos from these pages, but the book covers a lot more than basic maintenance and bolt-on upgrades. In fact, Moses's monumental first book-length effort starts with the Jeep as a concept and progresses all the way through modern, high-tech modifications.

The book opens with historical information, covering the Jeep lineage from Militaries to CJs to wagons, to Gladiators to Commandos to Wranglers. Here, Moses combines personal recollections with facts and specs.

Next, the "Buying a Jeep" chapter addresses what to look for in both new and used Jeeps. This section is followed by off-road driving tips, including a look at recovery equipment and a discussion of the Tread Lightly! program.

The bulk of the book is devoted to maintenance, troubleshooting, and performance upgrades. Hundreds of photos illustrate the how-to procedures, and the information goes significantly more in-depth than the factory service manual.

As a whole, the information in the Jeep Owner's Bible is encyclopedic. If it has to do with Jeeps, it's likely in this book somewhere. Moses's Jeep rememberances are interspersed throughout, which breaks up the facts and figures.

All in all, those who are passionate about Jeeps - 3.5 million have been sold since 1945, will find the Jeep Owner's Bible and indispensable and quickly dog-eared addition to their reference collection.
